RIP PS4 - If we've learned anything from Nintendo, this is obviously a home console, right?

It won't be a Switch type device. Sony wouldn't want to cannibalize their PS brand. Although it's just another example of Sony copying Nintendo with their ideas.

To be honest I want Sony to make it to force Nintendo to bring their A game with Switch... And get some competitive pricing.

And no wonder Nintendo thought people would steal their ideas, we should have known it wouldn't take Sony long to copy it

I don't get how you can patent something that's already been done. What's the point of patents?

This one has shapes on buttons instead of letters and analog triggers. Totally different.

But yeah I don't get it either.

I think Nintendo went with digital triggers just to be annoying. There's no other reason for it.

It's significantly cheaper to use digital, and they probably last longer too. Still love me that tactile feedback though. It's why I have a mechanical keyboard at home. MX Browns for lyfe!

I figured they'd go with a Vita 2.0 that plugs into the TV, but I didn't think they'd be blatant enough to also use detachable control wands. It really makes them look pretty lame that they can't ever come up with their own ideas.

To be fair this patent is from 2015

    Um...

There has been detachable controllers before the switch dude. Nintendo doesn't own a monopoly immediately when they do something. Besides this is a great design. I'd imagine that this would function better as a tablet than a switch if the vita is anything to go by

If Sony releases another handheld it will be kick-ass due to them learning from the vita and learning what made PSP a success.

This is all Sony needs to do to be successful in Japan and the west

    1. Low price, $199

    2. Use micro SD cards, include storage out of the box

    3. First and third party support to cater to both Japanese and western audiences

    4. Tablety features if it's gonna have detachable controllers. The vita functions well as a media device because you can stream media from popular services but you can also download media to the device directly from the web browser or transfer them through a computer

    5. For the love of gawd keep multiplayer free on it, do NOT ask $60 a year for this handheld.

Lol well it was filed the year before (August 6th 2015) Nintendo filed their NX patents (2016) so......Nintendo ripping off Sony confirmed lol.

That's some nice innovation there Nintendo, only beaten to the punch by over a year. But hey that innovation though

Damn, that was quick. Maybe they won't charge outrageous prices for every accessory.

Could be time I go back to Sony...

Sony will charge ridiculous prices for proprietary memory cards so you'll have to spend $40 for a crappy 16 GB

It's weird that Nintendo was scared of people stealing their ideas when Sony patented this first and there was some weird third party system that was like the Switch too which never took off.

Wii U made me try out Sony and I haven't really regretted it since.

To be fair, we don't know for sure when Nintendo patented the Switch concept. Jpd says the NX patents were in 2016, but there's no way they've only been working on this for less than a year. The Sony patent was 1.5 years ago. Do we not think Nintendo was working on Switch for longer than that?

They were working on it for longer than that, for sure. Probably 2013.

Yes indeed both companies have research divisions. Nintendo's patents were filled in 2016, companies will research concepts for a period of time and then generally file patents regardless of whether they intend to use them or not. Things may get revistited after a certain period of time.
Both companies have dozens of patents that they'll probably never use. For all we know this could have been an alternate PS4 pro controller or a stand alone PS Now machine etc.

Right. My main point is just that it's probably pretty likely that Nintendo already knew what they were doing before Sony filed a patent, so they probably didn't steal the idea from Sony. You never know, though. It does seem a little rushed.

Of course. My jab was more at the idea that Nintendo is somehow magically innovative and ceaselessly creative.

I can't really say if anyone "stole" any ideas from anyone. I simply don't know. That thing looks a lot like the Switch but that doesn't necessarily mean it would function like one, you know? The form similarity doesn't mean it works the same or has the same features.

I see the Switch as Nintendo Frankensteining a bunch of their old stuff together like they like to do. The joycons are basically SNES controllers crossed with a Wii remote, with unnecessary ice cube tech packed in. The Wii remote stuff is over ten years old now, and Nintendo didn't even come up with that, I believe they bought the tech from a guy who tried to sell it to Sony and MS first.

So that water is muddy at best. That said, that diagram looks a lot like the Switch, and I'm sure that's not a coincidence.
