    Next Zelda-- First Person?

The Wind Waker remake features the option for using the WiiU's controller's motion sensors to aim weapons in first person (as well as walk around while in first person), and I've heard one person say it's a little finicky and another person say it works better than analog. I'm hoping to get to try it out this fall. Though I have no intention of buying a game I already own-- this is the first (real) game on WiiU that I've wanted to get a feel for.

What are your impressions of the motion controls in Wind Waker and what do you think about the next Zelda featuring this option (for first person sword control as well as shooting)? Is it a good idea but the wrong franchise? Does it necessitate that the next Zelda feature realistic graphics to match the first person perspective?

Every Zelda game since Ocarina of Time has had first person aiming and I'd prefer them to keep it that way. With the new control schemes they have the option of giving you more movement while you're aimed, but the whole game in that perspective would not work. What I would like to see is something like a dodge roll while you're aiming your bow to make it slightly more action oriented.

I think it would always be nice to have options, but personally, I don't feel comfortable using standard first person due to the lack of periphery. I would use third person for swordplay.

I do not want Zelda to be first person. They'd be lowered to the level of Elder scrolls games, featuring really crappy one-dimensional sword-swinging animations. The kind of dynamic fighting Wind Waker has would never work in a first-person view, and I would rather have the former any day of the week.
Honestly, I don't know why they didn't keep those combat mechanics in subsequent Zelda titles. 'Twas my favourite by far.

I prefer third person all around so that would suck. I think Nintendo has already found the balance between third and first person in Zelda games.

I know Miyamoto wanted to do a First Person Zelda (and when you are in battle, it's in third Person)

But in my opinion, Zelda is better in 3D, or top down...

I don't really see Zelda in 1 person...because you ''don't feel'' the movement of the character.

I wouldn't mind more integration of 1st person but no way do I want to run around Hyrule like that.

Maybe Link's Crossbow Training 2 can be in all first person :l

Sword combat is awful in first person. Everybody knows how much I hate the combat in Skyrim.

In WWHD, it's obvious they don't mean for you to play first person for an extended amount of time. You can't use your sword or shield in first person. And honestly, the motion controls for the grappling hook and boomerang are kind of a pain and they don't work perfectly. Those motion controls are the only complaint I have about the game. I highly doubt if they make Zelda U in first person, and I really hope they don't.

Great point. There's too much to see with Link for it to be first person. Imagine in Wind Waker never seeing Link's facial expressions. That's a big part of the game.

I would probably prefer Zelda to stay in third person.

However, true 1:1 sword combat with the Wii Remote and nunchuck in first person could be extremely awesome. Then the Game Pad could be used for a combination of things including inventory, maps, telescope/pictobox/lens of truth.

I don't think it would be as bad as everyone is suggesting--it worked for Metroid Prime. There could be third person elements (pushing a block wouldn't work too well in first person, for example).

Not saying it's what I want, but I'd be open to trying it. I do think they need to play with the formula a bit, because it's starting to feel stale. T

Agreed, to a point. Third-person works really well for a lot of mechanics in the Zelda series. but an optional first-person mode could add to the immersiveness if done correctly. I would just hate for the combat mechanics to suffer because of a focus on first-person gameplay.

Actually... The last time they made drastic changes was Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and we saw how well that went

In all honesty, it COULD work, but it would be something that would have impact on the entire game's mechanics, and it may very well work or not work, it just depends on how you look at it.

I say pull a Fallout! You could use 1st or 3rd person, and use vats for combat if you wish

I say yes. Make it first person, put some guns in there, drop all the tools, the annoying puzzles, and for the love of god get rid of all that lame "adventure" stuff.

No, Zelda should not be first person, for reasons already mentioned.

I would have to say I'd prefer it stay third person. As many other have said the combat in Skyrim sucked, and I fear it would be the same scenario for first person Zelda.

I don't have The Wind Waker HD yet, but I'd like to think gyro controls for some weapons (and weapons alone) should be in Zelda U, merely because I loved the hell out of them in Ocarina of Time 3D.

Wind Waker has the best camera and combat controls of any third person game I've ever played and I always played with the camera pulled back as far as possible. Call me old fashioned but I prefer that 3/4 perspective.

What I found strange about Skyrim and its first person mode was that the interior areas of the game were built for first person while the overworld is kind of ugly in first person (and looks to have been built for a camera that was in third person). The sword combat can hardly qualify as a "combat system" in Skyrim because you're just flailing at enemies a dozen times until they die.

If the next Zelda featured a first person option during sword combat I would imagine that you would control the camera via the motion control, move the character via the left stick, and control the sword with the right stick like Fight Night. It would be a totally new combat system from previous Zelda games (not trying to paste Wind Waker's sword combat into first person).

That could work... if done perfectly. I wonder if Nintendo would experiment with the idea.
Hell, using the Wiimote in first person could make for a very interesting combat mechanic. I just miss all those parry moves from Wind Waker, and I don't know how that would work in first-person (unless it zoomed out to third-person to show the animation).
