One thing I'm wondering is what types of media will the Wii U support and be able to play? We're going to be able to hook up USB hard drives to it, which could open up a lot of possibilities. What types of music and video files will it be able to play? I have all of my DVDs ripped to a 2TB external hard drive that I'm going to be using with the Wii U. I would love to be able to play those movies through the Wii U. I would even be willing to convert all of the movies to a different file format that the Wii U supports.

I wish I knew what it will support so I can get to work starting on converting them if I need to.

As you know, I'm fairly clueless when it comes to tech stuff, but I honestly don't remember them saying anything about this sort of thing. I wonder why not? You'd think that being compatible with a standard USB hard drive it would get along with all sorts of standard file types and formats, but you never know. I don't know if this is the kind of information they'll share on Thursday or not. You might have to wait a while to find out.
Has the phrase "tired old cliche" become a tired old cliche?

The official worst Mario Kart player on the Wii U forums !!!

Well, the Wii supported MP3 and JPG in the photo channel so you can at least expect those two. I expect more image formats like GIF and PNG.
Whether or not you'll be able to play movies is uncertain, but I really doubt it. I think they might force you to use Netflix and similar apps.

I'll bet they have at least some video support. Even on the Wii, you could watch .mov, .avi, and DivX videos through the photo channel. I'm just kind of hoping they'll expand it to .mpg, and maybe .mp4 for HD video files.

Probably the same as the Wii and mp4 or something for videos.

If they include mp4, I'll be happy. I can work with that. I definitely don't want to be stuck with mov, DivX, and uncompressed avi files, though.

I doubt it will. But one can only hope. All the other systems in the world allow for this, why not Nintendo?

I doubt they will take away the features they had on the Wii. The only thing we know for sure is it will not be able to play blu ray discs.

I emailed Nintendo to find out what video file formats they will support. They emailed me back a form letter that said they can't tell me anything that's not on the web site. I guess I'll have to wait until it comes out to find out.
