Sonic Boom – Features 3DS to Wii U Connectivity, Classic Abilities Return, Surprises in Store

The Sonic Stadium has rounded up some juicy details on Sonic Boom for the Wii U and 3DS. Apparently the 3DS has some “surprises” in store for consumers, and it will connect with the Wii U version. SEGA’s Stephen Frost and Kellie Parker reveal new details in the interview below.

Here are the highlights of the interview from Sonic Stadium.

    - Big Red Button and Sanzaru Games have developers who have worked on franchises like Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter, Uncharted, True Crime, Shrek, God of War, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Ghostbusters, and the Simpsons.

    - The 3DS version is a separate experience from the Wii U version and is developed by Sanzaru Games. “We have a few surprises to announce in relation to the 3DS game, but you’ll just have to wait and see what they are.”

    - “The 3DS game will have some connectivity with the Wii U but details of that have not yet been announced.”

    - Sonic Boom will be a mix of 3-D and 2-D Gameplay. However, exploration will be a focus for Sonic Boom. Big Red Button is looking to provide a “familiar but new” experience. The will be 2-D elements but “maybe with a few twists.”

    - Each character will have multiple unique abilities. The team is looking to include as many classic Sonic abilities and attacks as possible. However, some of the classic ones won’t work in the type of game Sonic Boom is. Fans will appreciate what they have done and the new abilities added to Sonic Boom.

Sonic Boom is set for release on the 3DS and Wii U in 2014.

Read the full formal interview over at Sonic Stadium.

It's it an unwritten law or something that all Sonic games have to include 2D sections?

The 3DS connectivity had better not gimp the Wii U version in any way. I don't want them holding back on the Wii U version just so it can connect with the 3DS.

The next Wii U firmware update will force us to only run in Wii mode so the games don't look any better than the 3DS.

I think this sounds really good and I have bought no Sonic games in years. If Nintendo got even a quarter of the 3DS install base to buy a U the consoles troubles would be over.

I disagree, Nintendo need to get their studio sizes sorted so they can deal with making games for their handheld and home console devices and they need to establish strong ties with third party developers and publishers.

Shifting Wii U's will achieve none of these things and will merely paper over some large sized cracks in their business model.

Agreed. The Wii U's main weakness is the small library and lessening 3rd party support

The best thing Nintendo could do is bring someone into Nintendo who understands the games industry and who can take Nintendo forward.

Whatever you say. Trying to not tap into the biggest selling handheld device to bolster the U would be monumentally stupid of Nintendo. It's not papering over anything. It's merely expanding the U's install base.

Right, so when we see the groundwork being laid for better support and companies trying to expand what they have done previously on the U we should keep pissing and moaning about the past. Makes perfect sense to me.

The fact that it is a Sonic game is the least of the reasons that I'm excited about this game. I like it mostly because it looks awesome, and I wouldn't be any less excited if it were someone besides Sonic.

Wow! Because the company who has been a powerful force in the gaming industry for much longer than anyone else still in existence doesn't understand the games industry at all.

You're right it is, but it's not addressing the fundamental problems at Nintendo.

I read the thread title, saw Wii U-3DS, and thought of chaos. If so, this game is worth a hundred or more easily. If not, Segdoomed.

Evidently they don't. It's shown in their actions. The last three years Nintendo has been a laughing stock of the games industry. 3DS sales are nowhere near the same level as the DS and gamers along with third party developers want nothing to do with the Wii U.

The reason Nintendo has been a company for over 100 years is because they don't get feisty and act on impulse. And that's exactly why they'll still be in the video gaming industry long after Microsoft and Sony have dropped out. The gamer doesn't like it because we're not being spoon fed everything the way we think it should be. But that's exactly what is going to cause them to survive, even if there is another video game crash.

i can speak in generalities too! i like animals but only when they don't do stuff. i also am afraid of smelling things that are not a certain color. sometimes, i even get on things to sit or lean or create. another hobby is collecting collectibles.

Dude, third party games are not everything. A flood of games doesn't help. You have a hard time deciding and you could end up blowing money. Mario is a tested formula. No harm there. Nintendo doesn't need "support". Selection is nice if it's good. But there are a lot of no interest games out there.

Screw a flood as long as there is a sure fire formula like Mario Zelda and metroid. Sure you need more than just that. But Nintendo has that. Usually. Unless there is something I don't know I'm happy looking forward to the wiiu.

Case in point, how many no name games did you buy on the Nes...5 or 6...10 at the most? Then Mario Zelda metroid, kid Icarus, donkey Kong, perfect dark and such.
