new to Club Nintendo...how is everyone spending/managing their coins?

So as of right now I have 330 coins. I have a Wii U I've just recently started reading up on how the whole Club Nintendo works, and how some like the physical rewards where others prefer digital rewards...and how Japan gets all the good stuff, etc etc. I'm one who doesn't care about Mario statues or Pokemon towels, but rather I want actual games. I grew up with the NES/SNES and whatnot, so all of the games that are coming out are games that I've already played and/or beaten in my lifetime. So any games that I get via CN will be strictly for nostalgia purposes like most of you.

That being said, I've noticed some grumpiness when it comes to having tons of coins hoarded up but no games to spend it on. I'm guessing that's because the VC games being offered, are ones that have already been purchased in the past. I don't have any VC games that I've purchased in the past but now I've got these CN coins to spend. My question then is whether or not I should save them up and wait for something amazing, or do I just need to go ahead and get a game like SMB2 that's offered right now? I don't want to end up with 1,000 coins eventually and end up having to spend them on Bayou Billy and Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle (no offense if you like those games). Should I spend my coins on legit classics that I KNOW are fun plays...or should I save them up hoping for even better games?

    I appreciate any advice.

Welcome to the forum, feel free to fully participate in what we've got to offer

To answer your question, saving up coins can be a risky business because of the 2 year lifespan mixed with the risk/reward of putting off "meh" games in hopes of a cool figure (which usually doesn't even appear)

Also there's occasionally a game that's actually worthwhile, but the last time we even got a decent "recent" game was the Dillon's Rolling Western reward last year and every other month's rewards have been VC titles and stuff akin to shovelware

It all comes down to your preferences and whether or not you actually have those games on hand at the moment. VC titles are great if you don't have your old games but still want to play 'em

Hey thanks for the welcome! Long time lurker, first time poster :-). What you said is exactly what I needed to know. I'm worried about too many "meh" games later on and then I have expiring coins on my hand. 2 years seems like a long time, but I guess since they only refresh every month, that's only 24 times to spend coins.

I guess I'll be picking up SMB2 then ;-). The only thing that really bothers me is that Star Fox 64 is Wii Virtual Console and not eShop. I was easily going to get that game, but then saw the requirement to have the Classic Controller. *sigh* Why even release the games if you aren't going to allow them to be played natively on the Wii U???

    Anyway, thanks for the response!

I agree, I am extremely bugged that Star Fox is only for Wii-mode virtual console.

I'm a coin hoarder because sometimes they come out with a limited edition collectible that costs like, 1500 coins. I currently only have around 800 right now. But I think the game selection for virtual console right now is awesome. Now's a good time to get a game, I think.

I guess I just feel weird about it because I'm not all "jacked up about playing SMB2!!!!". I mean it's a cool game and all, but I'll just be getting it because it's free and then I'll have it in my collection.

I do have Super Mario Bros. and Ice Hockey that I purchased on the Virtual Console on the Wii way back in the day. Although I sold that machine so I can't "transfer" anything. I'm assuming I can upgrade those titles though through the eShop for $1.50 a piece even though I don't have the Wii to transfer them from? It shows my purchase history on my CN account, so I should be able to upgrade them from the cloud right?

That's a great question actually, I haven't tried that before. Theoretically I think you should be able to since it shows up on your account, but Nintendo has weird rules with their games that don't disassociate your account from your original system.

You should try it and let us know what happens lol I'm super curious

You would have had to transfer the games from the Wii to be able to buy the updates at a discount. There isn't a cloud setup for the Wii, it was linked directly to the particular machine.

As for the coins, it's a matter of preference. I am sitting on just shy of 2000 coins with none expired this year, and after buying both Paper Mario and SMB2 recently. The games have been cycling semi repeatedly the last year. It's the second time Starfox 64 has been offered for example. So, just grab what you like or save up for a little while. I build up just in case something interesting shows up again. Worst case, considering the VC will potentially have N64 titles eventually, grab them and wait patiently.

okay so I thought I would give everyone an update on my situation with having purchased Virtual Console games on my old Wii...and then selling it back in 2008. I called Nintendo and told them what happened, and I wasn't lying...I honestly thought I would be able to redownload my VC games to the new Wii U without penalty. Even if I had to pay the $1.50 fee or whatever to upgrade them to eShop, I was fine with that.

So after a couple of calls and some verification, they reimbursed my Wii Virtual Console account with 1000 Wii points. Note that is not $10 eShop credit, but Virtual Console points which can only been spent in the Wii Shop Channel. Regardless, I am going to buy a couple of NES games that are already in the eShop and then pay the $1.00 upgrade fee so that I can play them natively. I have to say that Nintendo should've allowed free transfers, but whatever. $2 for two VC games is not bad. I'm thinking Zelda and Metroid (NES).

Well, I spent all of mine on Star Fox 64 a few months ago, and then on FZero and some WarioWare game. Haven't had a lot of coins since then.

I Just grabbed Kid Icarus, Just to use my gift. There was Nothing to appealing on there in IMO. Almost pulled the trigger on NES remix, but I opted to Just wait for the retail version, which is my perferred format.
