As far as I know that is untrue. It wouldn't work for any games that require the pointer, and the gamepad screen just shuts off when you go to the Wii Menus. So unfortunately you can't right now, but there's a chance they can add that feature for games that use the classic controller.

its weird because they built in the IR lights into the gamepad

They never said you could do that. The only thing they have ever said that is remotely similar is that sometime in the future, they will start putting out VC games that can be used with the Gamepad. It hasn't happened yet, though.

The Gamepad does have a sensor bar built into it. I have no idea what it is for yet, though.

The IR lights are for the universal remote.

Here's what the sensor bar in the gamepad is for. Do you remember that original tech demo commercial for the Wii U? There was one scene where they put the game pad on the ground, and used the Wiimote to hit a golf ball off it. A game like that would be a little pointless because the Wii mote could do something like that without the gamepad, but it would be for similar features. I can't think of a way a game could use it intelligently, but they added it just to cover all bases.

Remember, they want to focus their R&D on the future, not the past. VC is a different story because it is emulator tech running from within the Wii U. Wii mode actually boots out of Wii U mode into something totally different.

I'm sure they'll add that at some point, but other than games like Xenoblade where I would really like to be able to play it while lying in bed, I'm much more excited for the ability of playing NES and SNES games on the gamepad. That would be just fantastic.

Yes since it is the Wii U VC it would make prefect sense to be able to play them on the gamepad.

Yeah, that's the sensor bar, like in the diagram. Even the Wii U guide points it out as a sensor bar. I really think this will be for Wii U games, and not for Wii games, though. You guys can hope, but I'd almost be willing to place a big bet against it.
